Saffron Finches and Bamboo
Spadecaller presents three Saffron finches (Sicalis flaveola) perched on bamboo branches. These birds are actually Tanagers from the Amazon Basin of South America. Their greatest populations are found in Columbia, northern Venezuela, western Ecuador, western Peru, eastern and southern Brazil. In Brazil they are called “canário de terra” or “native canary.” Although commonly viewed as a canary, it is not related to the Atlantic canary. These brightly colored finches have a pleasing but repetitious song which, unfortunately has led to them being kept as caged birds in many areas. “Saffron Finches and Bamboo” is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite completed in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 3/23/2022.
