Great Blue Heron at Sunrise
The largest heron native to North America is the great blue heron. Cruising the coastline with slow, deep wingbeats, the Great Blue Heron is a majestic sight. In the summer, it is found throughout most of North America, as far north as Alaska and the southern Canadian provinces. In winter, the range extends south through Florida, Mexico, and the Caribbean to South America. On the shores of Florida, fishermen are often surprised when they discover this large bird standing stealthily nearby waiting to snatch a live shrimp from their bait box. Their seemingly coy presence is often rewarded by a charitable gift. Should the heron lose patience, it is no surprise when this great bird steals the delectable booty and flies off. “Sunrise Flight of a Heron,” is a Spadecaller digital image and photo composite derived from a photo taken on the coast of St. Augustine, Florida by photographer and friend, Don Vecey.
