Dancing for Dionysus
Dionysus, commonly known by his Roman name Bacchus, appears to be a god who has two distinct origins. Dionysus was the god of wine, agriculture, and fertility of nature, who is also the patron god of the Greek stage. Dionysus also represents the outstanding features of the Mystery Religions, such as The Dionysian Mysteries, practiced in ancient Greece and Rome; the mysterious cult relied upon intoxicants and other trance-inducing techniques (like dance and music) to remove inhibitions and social constraints, liberating the individual to return to a natural state. It also provided some liberation for those marginalized by Greek society: women, slaves and foreigners.
