Moon Rising over Eris
The Kuiper Belt is a disc-shaped area in space consisting of of icy objects beyond the orbit of Neptune -- billions of kilometers from our sun. Pluto and Eris are the best known of these icy worlds. There may be hundreds more of these ice dwarfs out there. The Kuiper Belt and the even more distant Oort Cloud are believed to be the home of comets that orbit our sun. Eris was discovered in January 2005, and its identity was verified later that year. It has one known moon, Dysnomia. Other than some comets, Eris and Dysnomia are currently the most distant known natural objects in the Solar System. Digital Painting
