Wild Budgerigar in Bamboo Tree
The most widespread feral parrot in Florida is the Budgerigar, which is native to the interior of Australia. It is usually known as the parakeet and is commonly bred commercially for sale in pet stores. The distribution and breeding biology of these feral parrots in Florida is well established. Feral populations of this bird range as far north as Gainsville in the northern part of the state. Budgerigars are nomadic birds found in open habitats, primarily in scrub-land, open woodland, and grasslands. They usually nest in the cavities of pine trees. The birds are normally found in small flocks, but can form very large flocks under favorable conditions. The species is extremely nomadic, and the movement of the flocks is tied to the availability of food and water. Drought can drive flocks into more wooded habitat or coastal areas. They feed on the seeds of spinifex, grass weeds, and sometimes ripening wheat.
