Portrait of a Bison
The American buffalo, also known as the bison, holds great meaning for Native Americans; it symbolizes their spirit and retells the history of how their lives were once lived, free and in harmony with nature. The shaggy giant of the Great Plains known as the Bison, weighs as much as a ton, can run up to 40 mph, jump up to 6 feet vertically, and can pivot quickly to combat predators. Though the bison’s ancestors roamed the continent with saber-toothed tigers and woolly mammoths, it could not survive the conquest of settlers during the 1800’s, as the nation’s population moved into the west. Millions of bison were slaughtered recklessly by the settlers. Before their near extermination, there were 30 million to 60 million bison ranging from Canada to northern Mexico and from the Plains to the Eastern forests. By 1890, only about 1,000 remained, including two dozen in Yellowstone National Park. Currently, there are about 500,000 bison nationwide, which are raised as livestock on ranches with about 30,000 living in public herds on conservation lands. The Yellowstone herd, the last wild herd in the United States, remains genetically free of cattle genes. This is the Bison.
