Goliath Cockatoo
The origin of this bird lies close to the continent of Australia. It can be found in the woodllands and rainforests of New Guinea, and on the islands of Misol and Aru. A strange looking fellow of mostly black except for its naked red face. Depending on the condition and the mood of this fellow, his face can change shades of red. The Goliath is the largest cockatoo -up to 28 inches. This bird is gentle, shy and hard to keep. He is difficult to breed. The Palm Cockatoo is still relatively common in Cape York, but is threatened there by habitat loss, particularly bauxite mining around Weipa and altered fire regimes elsewhere. Palm Cockatoos are hunted in New Guinea. This species is in high demand for the pet trade due to its unusual appearance. Althouth its number still are high, its prospect for contiued success in the wild is becoming increasingly more precarious.

This is a beautiful bird, represented beautifully. Tha natural history commentary really makes this image stand out for its importance. However, the importance of the lesson, in this instance, is far outweighed by the art and the artist. Exceptional!! Keep 'em coming Matt!
